How to Use the Windows 10 Webcam (Lesson 1)
A Quick Start-Up Tutorial

Lesson 1 and 2: Practice taking video footage

Before you can begin editing video, you need to have video to edit!  Watch the above video so you know how to use the Windows 10 webcam.  Once you feel comfortable taking video, plan what you are going to record.  Since you are just beginning, don't get fancy!  Have a script or short story you can share.

A few things to keep in mind when you are recording video: Always pay attention to what is behind you.  Don't have your background cluttered and maybe even try for a background that reinforces what you are going to share in your video.

You will have Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 (2 days) to capture video footage.  Make sure you work hard and use your time wisely.  On Day 3, you will begin learning to edit your video clips.

Good luck, everybody, and enjoy taking video!

Lesson 3: What to do

Now that you have created some video clips, it's time to start learning how to edit your video.  Make sure you watch the above videos so you have an idea of how to begin the editing process.  As you watch the videos with your teacher, they can be paused so you can learn how to edit videos.

Practice having the Playlist window opened, having the Timeline visible, adding video, photos, or graphics to the Playlist, practice using the Split feature, add tracks,  add your videos, graphics, or graphics to the timeline, and add text.

Make sure you remember to save everything that has to do with your video to one folder where you will keep it and not move it around.  If you change the location where your files are saved, your video will not work properly when you try to open it another day.

Adding Text to Your Video (Lesson 4)
Adding Text

Adding Text to Your Video Part 2 (Lesson 4)
Adding Text 2

Lesson 4: Add Text to Your Video

In this lesson, add text to your video.  Think about logical places where text would look really good.  For instance, if your face is on the screen, add a text box (or bar) under your photo.

Try placing text in different locations on the screen.  Also, change the font, font color, change the text size, and experiment with other text options.

Don't forget to always be saving!  Videos have a habit of crashing.  That means that all the work you have gone to will be lost.

How to Make Text Fade In and Out (Lesson 5)
Fade Text In and Out

Lesson 5: How to Make Text Fade In and Out

Now that you've practiced adding text to your video, let's step up our game.  Let's make text that fades in and then out.

Most people don't like text that suddenly appears on the screen.  They prefer to see the text slightly fade in and the, after a few seconds, see the text fade away.

Watch the above video and try text fade ins and outs.  It can be tricky so be careful!  Your video at this point isn't perfect since you are just experimenting so don't be afraid to experiment with this font fun.

Any text you would like to experiment with will be fine.  Let's see what you can do!

Lesson 6: Cross Fades and Transitions

There are many times when you want to add transitions between video clips, images, or graphics.  Transitions can give your video a completed look.  However, you need to use transitions with care.  Also, the same transition should be used throughout the entire video.  Don't mix and match!  The most popular and useful transition is called a Cross Fade.

Watch the above video and learn how easy it is to create transitions in Shotcut.  One word of warning, though: Save the video you are working on with a different file name and then work on the newly renamed video.  Transitions cannot always be undone so you want to make sure original copies are always available just in case.

Undo Crossfade Transitions (Lesson 7)
Undo Crossfade Transition

Lesson 7: How to Undo Crossfade Transitions

It may not be possible to undo your crossfades or transitions.  It all depends on if you set them up correctly with the ability to undo them.  If you have created everything correctly, follow the above video to learn how to delete your transitions.
